Peter Bjornson (NDP)Bjornson is the minister of education, citizenship and youth.
This riding has existed since the 1899 election. The riding is located north of Winnipeg, nestled between the Selkirk riding to the east, and the Lakeside and Interlake ridings in the west. It has Lake Winnipeg and the Red River as its eastern boundary. The communities in this riding include Gimli, Winnipeg Beach, Petersfield, Clandeboye, and Matlock. The riding has returned members of a winning party, with two exceptions, since 1907.The population in 2001 was 21,225. The average family income was $68,437, with an unemployment rate of 5.4 per cent. The major industry was manufacturing (12.4%) followed by retail (11.8%).
