Jack Penner (PC)
This riding has existed since the 1879 election. It has been PC since 1977. The riding is in the southeast corner of the province with the Manitoba/North Dakota border as the southern boundary and the Manitoba/Ontario border as the eastern boundary. Its geography includes fertile Red River Valley farmland and the rugged, red Precambrian rock of the Canadian Shield. It includes the communities of Emerson, Altona, Dominion City, Rhineland, Gretna, Woodridge, and St. Jean Baptiste.The population in 2001 was 19,720. The average family income was $48,791, with an unemployment rate of 4.7 per cent. The main industry was agriculture (21.6%) followed by manufacturing (14.6%).
