A "socialist's dream"

I have heard Gary Doer and the rest of the trained seals expound on their "fiscal prudence" in managing Manitoba's affairs. What outright tripe, the only reason they have a balanced budget - under provincial law, by the way - is that they have raided not only the stabilization fund almost to depletion but vast amount of profits from Manitoba Hydro.

Is this sustainable prudent management ? Well to a socialist, yes. However this now means that even a minor blip in revenues and economic activity means not only depleting the stabilization fund completely but with lower profits to Hydro from reduced economic activity even that cash cow will have to be slaughtered on the altar of the NDP's fiscal prudence. What will be left is higher taxation rates, Hydro rates, user fees, etc.

We are now in the downturn, economic activity by the private sector is fast on the wane and the only source of major economic activity is squarely with Capital Projects: Floodway expansion, the Manitoba Hydro Tower project, etc. This of course is a false economy based upon recycled tax dollars and only results in a net loss to the economy of 40% of the taxpayers spending ability as we must fund that difference with what little we have left.

This is the socialist's dream of shared poverty and shared misery for all in action, one day the reckoning will come, hopefully I will have moved on as so many of my friends and peers have done and are continuing to do.
