Riding Profile:
This riding first existed in the 1883 election. It was eliminated
in 1969 and re-established in 1981 and has been PC since then. This riding
is in southwest Manitoba and has the Manitoba/North Dakota border as its
southern boundary. The riding includes Killarney, Carberry, Glenboro,
Pilot Mound and MacGregor.
The population in 1996 was 18,569. In 1999, almost 19 per cent of the
population was over the age of 65. Also, there was a significant German
population (13%).
The average family income in 1999 was $43,265 with an unemployment rate
of 3.50 per cent.
In 1999, the main industries in the riding were agriculture (37%) followed
by health and social services (9%).
Political History:
1981: PC Brian Ransom, who was elected in Souris-Killarney in 1977,
ran in this riding and defeated ND Joan Johannson by 3,115 votes.
1986: PC Denis Rocan defeated ND Gordon Kennedy by 2,037 votes.
1988: PC Rocan defeated LIB Ross McMillan by 598 votes. Rocan ran in
Gladstone in 1990.
1990: PC Bob Rose defeated LIB Doug Collins by 2,611 votes.
1995: PC Mervin Tweed defeated LIB Doug Collins by 3,046 votes.
1999: PC Mervin Tweed defeated ND Janet Brady by 2,135 votes.
1999 Turnout: 58.81%
