Riding Profile:
This was a new riding in 1990, and it has been PC since then.
The riding takes in the southeast part of Winnipeg. It runs between the
Red River in the west and the Seine River/city limits in the east; and
between Novavista/Vista in the north and the city limits in the south.
This riding contains large urban and rural areas within the city limits.
It encompasses a large portion of St. Vital in Winnipeg, with a more rural
atmosphere south of the perimeter highway.
The 1996 population was 18,833. In 1999, there was a significant francophone
population (9%) and German population (4%).
The average family income in 1999 was $63,800 with an unemployment rate
of 4.20 per cent.
In 1999, the major industries in this riding were health and social services
(14%) and other services (12%).
Political History:
1990: PC Louise Dacquay defeated LIB Herold Driedger, incumbent from
Niakwa (elected in 1988) by 47 votes.
1995: PC Dacquay defeated LIB Bobbi Ethier by 2,086 votes.
1999: PC Louise Dacquay defeated ND Leslie Fingler by 1,220 votes.
1999 Turnout: 74.12%
