Riding Profile:
This riding has existed since the 1888 election. It has been PC since
1959. This riding is in southwest Manitoba. It surrounds Brandon, which
is in the central part of the riding. Minnedosa is the largest community.
Other communities in this riding include: Souris, Rivers, Rapid City,
Shilo, Basswood, Wawanesa and Erickson.
The population in 1996 was 18,694. Almost 90 per cent of the population
cited English as their mother tongue in 1999, but there is still a significant
German population (6%). Almost 15 per cent of the population was over
the age of 65 in 1999.
The average family income in 1999 was $46,627 with an unemployment rate
of 3.50 per cent.
In 1999, agriculture (22%) was the major industry in this riding followed
by government services, health and social services and other services
(12% each).
Political History:
1959,1962,1966 and 1969: PC Walter Weir was elected. He was also the
premier from 1967 to 1969.
1971: PC David Blake was first elected in by-election. He was re-elected
in 1973, 1977, 1981 and 1986.
1988: PC Harold Gilleshammer defeated LIB Terry Drebit by 1,173 votes.
1990: PC Gilleshammer again defeated LIB Drebit, this time by 2,091
votes.
1995: PC Gilleshammer defeated ND Joe Anderson by 2,457 votes.
1999: PC Harold Gilleshammer defeated ND Harvey Paterson by 903 votes.
1999 Turnout: 62.9%
