Riding Profile:

This riding first existed in the 1981 election and has been PC since then. The riding is in the western part of Winnipeg and runs from the Assiniboine River in the south to Portage Ave/Vimy Road/Ness Ave in the north. The western boundary is the city limit; eastern boundary is Moray St/ Portage Avenue/Vernon Road. In this riding are the St Charles and Glendale Country Clubs and the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens and Assumption Cemetery.

The population was 20,236 in 1996. Almost 13 per cent of the population are immigrants: German (6%) Ukranian (5%) in 1999. This riding has the third highest seniors (over age 65) population in the province (20.7%).

The average family income in 1999 was $63,038 with an unemployment rate of 5.80 per cent.

The major industries in 1999 were services (15%) followed by retail trade (13%).

Political History:

  • PC Gerrie Hammond won in 1981, 1986 and 1988.

  • 1990: PC Eric Stefanson defeated LIB Jasper McKee by 2,383 votes.

  • 1995: PC Stefanson defeated LIB Vic Wieler by 3,333 votes.

  • 1999: PC Stefanson defeated ND Dennis Kshyk by 3,048 votes.

  • 2000: In a by-election, PC Stuart Murray defeated LIB Vic Wieler by 2,211 votes.

    2000 by-election turnout: 55%
