Riding Profile:
This riding was re-established prior to 1958 election. (There had been
a Kildonan riding twice in 1800s.) The riding is in northeast Winnipeg
and runs between the Red River in the east and McPhillips St. in the west;
from the city limits in the north to Inkster/CPR Line/ Kingsbury in the
south.
The population in 1996 was 19,522. Almost 18 per cent of the population
was over 65 years of age in 1999. The average family income was $54,381
with an unemployment rate of 6.80 per cent.
This riding is composed mainly of middle and upper income earners. It
is an ethnically-mixed riding -- the immigrant population was about 23
per cent in 1999: Ukrainians (14%), Jewish (11%), Polish (7%), Italian
(3%).
In 1999, manufacturing was the main industry (16%) followed by other services
(15%).
Political History:
ND Peter Fox won in 1966, 1969, 1973 and 1977.
1977: ND Fox defeated PC James Hanson by 917 votes.
1981: ND Mary-Beth Dolin defeated PC Ken Galanchuk by 2,316 votes. Mary-Beth
Dolin died in April, 1985.
1985: In a by-election, ND Marty Dolin (Mary-Beth's husband) defeated
PC Bev Rayburn by 1,084 votes.
1986: ND Dolin again defeated PC Rayburn, this time by 1,989 votes.
1988: LIB Gulzar Cheema defeated PC John Baluta by 585 votes. ND Dolin
was third.
1990: ND David Chomiak defeated PC David Langtry by 210 votes.
1995: ND Chomiak defeated PC Robert Praznik by 2,488 votes.
1999: ND Chomiak defeated Shannon Martin by 3,559 votes.
David Chomiak is the Minister of Health.
