Riding Profile:
The riding first existed in the 1958 election. The riding is
in the northern part of Winnipeg and runs between the city limits in the
north and Oak Point/Muskoka Ave in the south. The western boundary is
the city limits; the eastern boundary is Keewatin/Inkster/Mandalay/Jefferson/Dunham/Leila/Ritchie.
The population in 1996 was 19,246. The riding had a wide range of income
earners with the average family income in 1999 at $51,274. The unemployment
rate was 8.10 per cent.
Only about four per cent of the population was over the age of 65 in 1999.
At over 30 per cent, the riding had the third highest immigrant population
in the province -- with Filipino (21%) Ukrainian (6%) East Indian (5%)
in 1999.
In 1999, manufacturing (23%) was the major industry followed by services
(12%).
Political History:
1973 and 1977: ND Sid Green, who was first elected here in 1966, was
re-elected.
1981: ND Don Scott defeated PC Bill Dueck by 4,722 votes. Green, running
for the Manitoba Progressive Party got 783 votes.
1986: ND Scott defeated PC Bayani Morcilla by 3,754 votes.
1988: LIB Kevin Lamoureux defeated ND Scott by 368 votes.
1990: LIB Lamoureux defeated ND Ajit Deol by 965 votes.
1995: LIB Lamoureux defeated ND Poy Gomez by 1,745 votes. Lamoureux
became an IND LIB on 1997.
1999: ND Becky Barrett defeated LIB Kevin Lamoureux by 143 votes.
Becky Barret is the Minister of Labour and Immigration, the Minister Responsible
for Multiculturalism and the Minister Responsible for the Worker's Compensation
Board.
