Riding Profile:
The riding has existed since the 1958 election and has been PC
since then, except for 1988-1990, when it was Liberal. The riding is in
the southern part of Winnipeg. With the Red River as its eastern border,
it runs from the CNR Main Line/Jubillee in the north to Sifton/Chancellor
Matheson/Chancellor in the south. The western boundary is Waverley Street.
The riding consists of mostly middle-class residential areas, with some
small businesses.
In 1999, 48 per cent of the occupied dwellings were rentals. The University
of Manitoba is located in this riding.
The population was 20,383 in 1996. In 1999, there was a large immigrant
population (over 16%), with five per cent listing German as their ethnic
origin. In 1999, the average family income was $50,720, but there was
a high incidence of low income (26%). The unemployment rate was 6.40 per
cent.
The major industries in 1999 were the service industry (17%) followed
by retail trade (12%) and educational services (12%).
Almost 23 per cent of the population had a university degree -- one of
the highest in the province.
Political History:
1969: PC Bud Sherman defeated ND Grant Crosby by 1,507 votes. He was
re-elected in 1973, 1977 and 1981. He resigned in 1984 to run federally.
1984: In a by-election, PC Charlie Birt defeated LIB Sharon Carstairs
by 1,568 votes.
1986: PC Birt defeated ND Nora Losey by 1,988 votes.
1988: LIB Laurie Evans defeated PC Birt by 882 votes.
1990: PC Rosemary Vodrey defeated LIB Evans by 1,113 votes.
1995: PC Vodrey defeated LIB Jim Woodman by 1,525 votes.
1999: PC Joy Smith defeated ND Lawrie Cherniak by only 30 votes.
1999 Turnout: 75.09%
