Riding Profile:

The riding first existed it the 1981 election and it has been NDP since then. The riding is in the northeast part of Winnipeg. It is bounded by Dunrobin/Antrim Road in the north; Molson/Panet in the east; Thomas/Tyne in the south and Watt Street in the west.

The riding has a fairly high ethnic mix with a 16 per cent immigrant population in 1999. The Aboriginal population was significant as well (9%). German and Ukrainian ethnicities were also dominant (9% and 7% respectively).

The riding has one of the lowest average family incomes in the province -- over $10,000 below Manitoba average at $39,613 in 1999. The incidence of low income was high (over 32%) as was the number of rentals (41%). Over 21 per cent of households were lone-parent families in 1999.

The population in 1996 was 20,318. The unemployment rate was 9.50 per cent in 1999.

The major industry in 1999 was manufacturing (18%) followed by the service (14%) and retail trade (14%) industries.

Political History:

  • 1981: ND Peter Fox, who had been elected in Kildonan in 1969, 1973 and 1977, ran in this new riding and defeated PC Scotty McVicar by 2,747.

  • 1986: ND Gary Doer defeated PC Brent Aubertin by 1,841 votes.

  • 1988: Doer was elected Leader of Manitoba NDP. He defeated LIB Barbara Blomeley by 754 votes.

  • 1990: ND Doer defeated PC Vic Rubiletz by 2,651 votes.

  • 1995: ND Doer defeated PC Paul Murphy by 2,982 votes.

  • 1999: ND Doer defeated PC Paul Murphy by 3,993 votes.

    Gary Doer is the Premier of Manitoba.

    1999 Turnout: 64.26%
