Riding Profile:

The riding first existed in the 1969 election and it has been PC since then. The riding takes in the western corner of Winnipeg, south of the Assiniboine River and north of the city limits, and between the city limits in the west and Laxdall/Elmhurst/CN Line/McCreary Road in the east.

It is an urban neighbourhood surrounded by forest and field. It is comprised mostly of middle and upper-middle-class families. The average family income was $70,417 in 1999 with an unemployment rate of 5.20%.

The population in 1996 was 20,262. The total immigrant population was over 11% in 1999 with almost half being of German ethnic origin.

The dominant industry is service (15%) followed by retail trade (12%) and health and social services (11%).

Political History:

  • 1973: PC Moug defeated ND R.N. Benson by 2,626 votes.

  • 1976: By-election - PC Sterling Lyon was re-elected.

  • 1977: PC Lyon defeated ND Maureen Hemphill by 6,343 votes.

  • 1981: PC Lyon defeated ND Toni Vosters by 3,091 votes.

  • 1986: PC Jim Ernst defeated ND Mike MacIsaac by 3,698 votes.

  • 1988: PC Ernst defeated LIB Shari Nelson, who was 3rd in 1986, by 820.

  • 1990: PC Ernst defeated LIB Ken Brown by 2,507 votes.

  • 1995: PC Ernst defeated LIB Gail Watson by 2,779 votes.

  • 1998: By-election - PC Myrna Driedger defeated LIB Alana McKenzie by 1,243 votes.

  • 1999: PC Driedger defeated Alana McKenzie by 3,114 votes.

    1999 Turnout: 73.87%
