The riding first existed in the 1969 election and it has been
PC since then. The riding takes in the western corner of Winnipeg, south
of the Assiniboine River and north of the city limits, and between the
city limits in the west and Laxdall/Elmhurst/CN Line/McCreary Road in
It is an urban neighbourhood surrounded by forest and field. It is comprised
mostly of middle and upper-middle-class families. The average family income
was $70,417 in 1999 with an unemployment rate of 5.20%.
The population in 1996 was 20,262. The total immigrant population was
over 11% in 1999 with almost half being of German ethnic origin.
The dominant industry is service (15%) followed by retail trade (12%)
and health and social services (11%).
