For three straight nights, we're lighting up the pasty old Golden Boy with the colours of the rainbow!
As I gear up for the gayest weekend in Winnipeg - Pride! - I've noticed that it's actually getting... pretty straight.
My hetero gal pals, Mary Agnes and Lindsay, are excitedly planning a trip to the Pride beer tent on Sunday to see me. My straight high school buddy Trevor is coming to the march with his daughter Audrey. And one of my gay friends, Graham, told me his dad wants to cheer him on in the parade!
I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I mean, there are plenty of great reasons to gay it up on this beautiful spring weekend:

**Our march ain't the Santa Claus parade, where you have to keep a safe distance from the dancing fairies. We encourage everyone to get right in there and prance, strut, vogue or crawl. In our big gay family, everyone is welcome.
**Makeup tips! Are you planning your look for the upcoming Bomber season? Gay Pride is the perfect place to get advice on wigs and body paint!
** Queer Beer! What, you thought we only sipped girly drinks? Try some of Half Pints' "fruity and fabulous" new brew at the Pride Beer Tent. It's also a great place to meet straight chicks hanging out with their gay BFFs.
** Pancakes! Every year the Pride rally at the Manitoba Legislature kicks off with a pancake breakfast. That's a meal of champions everyone can agree on, no matter who you just crawled out of bed with.

** Speaking of the Manitoba Legislature... You'll want to come check out our little redesign. For three straight nights, we're lighting up the pasty old Golden Boy
with the colours of the rainbow!
** Feel good about yourself. Obama's finally onside with us, but unfortunately, most of the planet still isn't. Marching in a gay parade still puts you ahead of the world's civil rights curve.
** Afraid of gay bars? Don't worry, this year's Pride dance party lets loose at a venue many straights know all too well - Whiskey Dix
And finally, here's one last reason why straights should embrace LGBT Pride... because we embraced you, by expanding our already long acronym to LGBTTIQQ2SA. For a list of what all those letters stand for, check out the Urban Dictionary
. In the meantime, what you need to know is that the A stands for 'allies' and the Q stands for 'questioning'.

Now, I don't mean to imply that you're questioning anything about yourself if you decide to check out Gay Pride's 25th anniversary. But if you do, just keep in mind that we might recruit you... and you might even discover you like it. Hope to see you this weekend!Kaj Hasselriis is a producer for the CBC Radio program DNTO. He has also marched in Pride parades around the world, including Australia, Peru, India and South Africa.
