NAfro Dance Productions: Mapiko (CBC)
Western Canada's only African contemporary dance ensemble makes
us all think about how we see ourselves.
Casimiro Nhussi is the force behind NAfro Dance Productions. He is a professional African dancer, instructor and musician here in Winnipeg. He is originally from Mozambique, Africa and his dance career has taken him around the world.
The show, which runs from March 2 - 4, is called Mapiko. "Mapiko" is the traditional Makonde language means 'mask'. "We look at when we are born and we are pure as can be and then when we wear masks we change", says Nhussi. "some switch masks and they go crazy because it doesn't fit"
Mapiko features ten dancers and nine musicians. There will be 150 percussion instruments throughout the Gas Station Theatre.
This is NAfro Dance Productions' 10th anniversary season and they continue to entertain audiences with their thought-provoking themes and exciting music.
