The Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) has announced the cancellation of three performances of Svengali in the lucrative Southern Ontario market, despite critical acclaim for its premiere in WInnipeg. Performances of Svengali, its newest creation, were scheduled for Toronto, Hamilton and London in January, 2012.
The organization cites unprecedented fiscal pressures for the cancellation. This is the first time the RWB has cancelled touring shows.
Rob Herd, Executive Director of the RWB, says ticket sales were poor. "Rather than continuing on and taking a huge risk and then maybe disappointing people once tickets are bought we would pull back at this point in time to be prudent," he said.
He admits competition for the entertainment dollar is fierce. "We've had things that have come close to the edge but what we're finding is that the market is changing quite drastically and all of us I think are adapting to that."
Performances at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on January 26 - 28, 2012 as well as shows in British Columbia in April will go ahead as scheduled.
