Make way for the art-mobile! That's what Art City is calling its new van. It's a wild design that perfectly suits Art City's innovative and distinctive approach to programming.
The unveiling is August 2 and it's taking place in an unusual location: on the rooftop of the Winnipeg At Gallery.
The van has been decorated by a Dutch artist Olaf Mooij, who is known for his series of "art cars." He's had a long-time association with the West Broadway art drop-in centre for kids. He designed the striking bike that tops the Art City studio. For the new van, he came up with the idea of buying a whole bunch of used speakers from stores like Value Village and installing them on the roof of the van.
"It looks a little bit like a city on top of a van," said Mooii. "So for Art City it looks a little bit like a city."
The kids at Art City are helping as well. They've been designing decals that will add to the decoration.
The van will be used for everything they do -- running errands, picking up supplies, field trips, public events and of course, bringing the noise.
Eddie Ayoub is the artistic director of Art City. He says of Mooij, "he's a really dynamic, interesting, fun guy." The public will have a chance to meet him at the launch at the WAG.
The event begins with an artist talk with Mooij and Art City founder Wanda Koop at 7:00 p.m. followed by the unveiling. After that it's party time with DJ Co-Op.
