From Endangered Species by Shawna Dempsey and Lori Millan (Lori Millan)
The Queer City Cinema WideOpenWide coast-to-coast tour stops this weekend in Winnipeg, with screenings of 28 short works at Video Pool (#300-100 Arthur Street). As many gay film festivals become increasingly mainstream, WideOpenWide, which originates in Regina, remains defiantly raunchy, rude and dangerous, with some boundary-busting explorations of gender, sex and art.
Along with films and videos from across North America and Europe, the fest features the work of several Winnipeg-based artists. Local gals Shawna Dempsey and Lori Millan offer a cheeky Hinterland Who's Who of "endangered lesbian species," like "the Feminist Marxist" and "the Lesbian Separatist." Kevin Lee Burton's Nikamowin is a hypnotic soundscape based on the Cree language, while The Island of the Hermaphrodites is a dreamy, lyrical, gorgeously edited pastoral piece from Noam Gonick.
Viewers should be aware going in that WideOpenWide showcases not just oodles of nudity but a boatload of graphic sex acts, culminating in Guy Maddin's The Little White Cloud that Cried, in which a triple-X hardcore orgy is filtered through Maddin's characteristically retro, outré, quiveringly strange sensibility. (And before anyone gets worked up about "taxpayers' dollars," I should point out that this one was funded by the Germans.)
Millan, Dempsey and Gonick will be in attendance Friday and Saturday.
