I prefer slow, sad melodies since that's normally my state of mind while writing.
—Sonia Eidse, musician
For now, local singer-songwriter Sonia Eidse is content to keep penning and amassing new tracks.
"I haven't started working on an album per se," the 22 year-old explains. "Right now, I'm busy stacking up songs."
Eidse first began playing guitar and writing her own music at a tender age of 15, drawing upon the many singer-songwriters she idolized while doing so - Feist, Roberta Flack, and Kate Bush all left an indelible impact on the ascending musician.
Channeling these influences led to Eidse releasing a pair of stunningly beautiful EPs - Acoustic Volumes 1 and 2, respectively - over the summer of 2012.
Throughout both releases, Eidse displays a natural ear for melody and for crafting touching, honest songs.
One thing that's evident in her work: sadness plays a large role both lyrically and musically.
"While I like all kinds of music - happy, sad - I prefer slow, sad melodies since that's normally my state of mind while writing."
The young songstress, who also plays some piano, has had ample opportunity to bring these songs to a live setting.
This included taking the stage at several big time provincial events including The Winnipeg Folk Festival and the Fire and Water Music Festival. Eidse, who is Metis, has also featured prominently in several showcases for Aboriginal Music Week.
Performing mostly as a solo act, Eidse has started working with some backup musicians to help flesh out some of her material and notes how her ideal set up is a "nice, subtle backup," a sound which may appear on forthcoming work.
For fans eager to hear some new songs, though, Eidse may release a single or two on the internet in the near future, but for now, she's content to keep writing away and amassing new tracks.
"However," she notes, "Expect some new material next year."
Catch Sonia Eidse at Ozzy's on September 4 as part of New Music Wednesdays.
