Take Me To The Pilot (Alyssa Arnold)
What started as a solo performer in his basement has burgeoned into a full fledged band touring across the United States.
Take Me To The Pilot started with singer Mike Bilenki, eventually, he was joined by Eric Grabowecky on guitar, Adam Brown on bass and drummer Jonathan James.
The band has just released a video for the song "Melody" from the EP, What Makes You, and it heartily celebrates all things '80s.
SCENE checked in with lead singer Mike Bilenki about his passion for the decade.
How does "Melody" take us Back to the Future?
Well it definitely takes us back! We got to travel through time back to the '80s and get down, glam-rock style! We referenced Back To The Future in the intro because it initially inspired us to film the video in another era.
What stood out about that decade for you as songwriters?
Everything was just more. The hooks were bigger. The solos were crazier. Even the drums sounded larger than life. The '80s was all about excess, which I think is starting to come back around today. With the whole dance-club-neon thing we have going on today I feel like the '80s is more relevant than it's been in a long time. Things have come full circle and here we are - back to 'more' again.
What else is new with this video?
What's new is that nothing is new! Every piece of clothing came from a thrift shop or the back of somebody's closet, every piece of gear is vintage, every prop and decoration is actually from the '80s!
Here's a good indicator of how far we took it - if you look closely during the scenes when our main extras are on the couch and people are playing pool you'll notice a platinum plaque off in the background. That's a real plaque (three times platinum) for the Top Gun soundtrack. An actual piece of '80s history. Most bands try to stay current when making videos - we went the opposite direction.
Take Me to the Pilot is heading out on their first U.S. tour, and will be hitting the summer festival circuit.
