It's a project about who we honour and why we honour them. I think we're taught that people should be honoured for the content of their character and Reggie has that.
—John K. Samson, musician
On February 23, 2013, Winnipeg musician John K. Samson and a choir of friends and supporters delivered a petition to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The event was captured by Tim Thompson in the short film, We The Undersigned.
Over several years, Samson had been steadily growing an online petition to get Reggie "The Riverton Rifle" Leach inducted into the Hall of Fame.
"It's a project about who we honour and why we honour them. I think we're taught that people should be honoured for the content of their character and Reggie has that, he's such an inspirational figure to so many different communities," Samson said.
Samson had never met the First Nations NHL star when he wrote "www.ipetitions.com/petition/rivertonrifle," - a song title that gave a web address where people could register their support.
And although the main focus of Thompson's film is the hand delivery of the petition, it also includes a great moment caught during Hockey Day in Canada in 2010 in Whitehorse. At that event, Samson played the song and event organizers surprised him by bringing Leach out on stage - capturing Samson's obvious surprise and delight.
