Shaden Garett & The 12 Midnights in "Tender Wild Animal: The Movie" (S. Garett)
I was wandering in the woods in Washington for seven weeks with a few pens and lots of paper. I found an old abandoned microwave tower on the top of a mountain. I always wanted to make-out in a bed with wheels while it rolled down a hill.
—Shaden Garett, musician/filmmaker
What's a guy to do when he spends a lot of time with talented musicians? Make a movie with them, of course!
Shaden Garett is an accomplished musician and member of The 12 Midnights who is branching out into filmmaking.
Along with the premiere of Tender Wild Animal: The Movie on Friday April 12 at the Park Theatre, will be a concert including Shaden Garett & The 12 Midnights, Jeremy Fisher, Secondhandpants, Feed the Birds and comedy with host Aisha Alfa.
SCENE wanted to go behind the scenes with Garett the musician and moviemaker:
In three sentences or less, describe Tender Wild Animal: The movie.
What happens when you focus the imaginations and energies of 40 amazing friends, of whom most are artists, though none are actors!!! Five them a cameraman, laser guns, and a few daily samosas...remove all inhibitions (since nobody knows anything about what a film should look like anyway) and check up on them four months later.
BOOM...Tender Wild Animal: The Movie...steam-punk/sci-fi/music video romance...
What inspired the movie?
I was wandering in the woods in Washington for seven weeks with a few pens and lots of paper. I found an old abandoned microwave tower on the top of a mountain. I always wanted to make-out in a bed with wheels while it rolled down a hill - I thought I'd never seen that in any movie before.
You are a musician first - What was it that whet your appetite for filmmaking?
We did a tribute to one of my fav bands, Dire Straits - The 12 Midnights version of Money For Nothing. I wrote the 'treatment' and built the sets. Afterwords, I thought...'damn...I'd like to direct the next one'!
This seems to be a unique event - combination film release and concert. Are you attempting to start a new trend?
Definitely a unique night is right! We're feelin' it out. It might be a template. We've talked about taking the movie and also comedy and concert across the country. People are always looking for something out of the ordinary!!
How do you hope to combine your talents in the future?
I'm not sure what the future holds. I've discovered I'm probably more suited for directing/project management/film. But I find music more challenging and that demand will keep me fighting to be better...so the foundations of my vision still appears to be mostly musical.
What will your next film be about?
We have a few ideas in the works...Both are videos from the newest 12 Midnights album. Facing South video includes motorcycles (that's what the song is about), car chases/crashes and police cars and the desert/USA/Las Vegas Medicine Woman (new song). I think we will try and use footage from Friday's show combined with some ethereal special fx and traditional native imagery...TeePees/horses/forest.
