Winnipeg band Red Moon Road spends a lot of time in the great outdoors, even playing in freezing temperatures on ski hills and the frozen river trail.
The group also spends a lot of time outside the city, in cabins and in nature, writing and playing music.
So when it came time for Daniel Peloquin-Hopfner, Daniel Jordan and Sheena Rattai to offer their Playlist, most of the tracks had some connection to their long drives to and from the city.
"God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys
Sheena was driving back for a gig once and had to learn this tune. She says ever since it has conjured the drive for her.
Last summer the three of us were the back up singers in Rocki Rolletti's band for a wedding at the Yacht Club on Lake of the Woods, which is on an island.
We did a couple of Beach Boys songs including "Sloop John B," boy there are a lot of harmonies on that one! To get to the gig we had to transport a seven person band, PA system and lights by boat.
We feel the Beach Boys would have approved.
"Harvest Moon" by Neil Young
We have driven that highway after dark on many many occasions. Anytime one of those incredible larger-than-life full harvest moons appears from behind the treeline, someone always starts to hum this tune.
"Ventura Highway" by America
We love this band. We called in to the Kenora radio station driving from Falcon Lake to Thunder Bay for a show once to answer a trivia question (who was the former lead singer of Yes... Jon Anderson!) and in return could request any song. We requested this one. These guys could sing their butts off and made acoustic instruments ROCK!
"Perth" by Bon Iver
Perfect contemplation music for those long stretches of highway.
"Heir Apparent" by Opeth
Daniel PH used to be a metal drummer. This is his wake-up music, the rest of us try not to fall asleep.
"Going up the Country" by Canned Heat
Red Moon Road plays at the West End Cultural Centre on Thursday March 28.
