Marti Sarbit (Trevor Marezylo) of Imaginary Cities and Coolio (AP) have more in common than you'd think.
Winnipeg band Alfa - named for SCENE On Air host Ismaila Alfa - is partway into the recording of their debut album. In the band, Alfa is joined by Mike Petkau Falk of Les Jupes and local jazz players Will Bonness, Curtis Nowosad and Julian Bradford.
But instead of just putting on a regular club show to raise money, Alfa has put together what should be a pretty fun night of...rap karaoke!
He's called on a few friends to hit the stage at the Pyramid to cover classic rap songs. "I know that a lot of the musicians that I work with have a deep love for rap music. They're in their bathrooms rapping along with their favourite so I just asked them to do it onstage," he said.
Marti Sarbit of Imaginary Cities will be joined by Chic Gamine's Alexa Dirks for a cover of Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise." Here's hoping at least one of the ladies attempts Coolio's signature hairstyle. Dirks will also tackle a notable tune courtesy of Eminem and Dr. Dre.
And if you've ever wanted to hear a female voice covering Warren G's "Regulate" featuring Nate Dogg, you're in luck! That song will be performed by Chic Gamine's Andrina Turenne.
And Quinzy's David Pankratz will be putting his spin on a certain Oscar winning Eminem song made famous by the movie, 8 Mile. You might have heard it.
A pile of other performers will also take the stage, including Alfa.
The show takes place at The Pyramid on January 10. Tickets are available at Kustom Kulture, Music Trader and Into the Music.
