Don Amero (Daryl Hiebert )
Perhaps it's all in my head, but I feel more cheery at Christmas time and it seems to me that there's a lot more cheery folk out and about as well.
—Don Amero, singer/songwriter
How is it that for some people, Christmas stays fresh year after year? Singer/songwriter Don Amero seems to truly understand and appreciate the magic of Christmas.
For the third year in a row, he is presenting his Amero Little Christmas. And this year he's taking his show on the road. After beginning last week in Brandon and Virden, he will also perform in Dauphin, Neepawa, Winnipeg, Kenora and St-Pierre-Jolys before he comes home to decorate his own Christmas tree.
SCENE asked Don Amero to tell us why Christmas is so special to him.
Food - Throughout the year I am quite conscious about how much I eat at mealtime, but the holidays are when I really let loose. It's great because we're all wearing sweaters anyway, so if I put on a few pounds over the Christmas season I can hide them under my favourite holiday sweater that my grandma gave me.
Music - It truly is unacceptable to play Christmas songs in September, but as soon as the snow flies both my wife and I are both usually running for the Bing Crosby Christmas CD. We both love the classics. And since we know we only have a few weeks of Christmas music to keep us for the next year we make sure our stereo is always playing Christmas music.
Happiness - Perhaps it's all in my head, but I feel more cheery at Christmas time and it seems to me that there's a lot more cheery folk out and about as well. It's funny because any other time of the year if you cut me off I may find a few choice words that I'll not mention here, but around Christmas if you cut me off I tend to just wave you on in with a smile on my face.
Joy and Wonder - Watching my one year old son Oscar's face light up every time he sees a Christmas tree.
Family - I am on the road a lot and I rarely get to see my family. A Christmas tradition for my family is to gather everyone on boxing day and have a huge dinner and just catch up. It's usually the thing I look forward to most.
