Pianist and composer Mike Janzen brings his trio to Winnipeg. (Tim Leyes)
Jazz pianist and composer Mike Janzen is a former Winnipegger and he's headed home for a show with the rest of his trio - drummer Larnell Lewis and bassist George Koller.
Since we know he's well steeped in the jazz world, SCENE asked what we'd find on his current Playlist.
"Blue Alert" by Madeleine Peyroux
I just finished working on a Christmas album and was inspired by the full bodied, old swing style of this song. Maybe it's the Billie Holiday-esque vocals or maybe it's that every note belongs, but this is wonderfully produced music.
"Find my Way" by Gabe Dixon Band
It's not often that you listen to a pop album where every song is strong but this is a great example of just that. Sometimes after seasons of heavier compositional lifting, it's a real treat to put this band on and enjoy some excellent piano-pop songwriting.
"The Falcon Will Fly Again" by Brad Mehldau and Joshua Redman
Every now and then you hear something and you know it'll be with you for a long time and this song is just that. Simple, lyrical, relentless and gorgeously playful.
"Everybody Dance Now" by C + C Music Factory
My daughter just turned two, and is there any better song to practice your dance moves to?
"Beatitudes" by Kronos Quartet
Although the song is really a very simple ostinato, each repetition of the melody builds on the previous until the airwaves are full with glory and goodness. This song settles me down and brings calm to the usual business that surrounds.
The Mike Janzen Trio will be performing at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg on Oct. 27th.
