Cast of "Nixon in China" at San Francisco Opera (Cory Weaver)
To not only get a chance to direct there, but to direct a new production there was an unbelievably exciting moment in my career.
—Michael Cavanagh, director of "Nixon in China"
Winnipeggers may remember Michael Cavanagh from his Fringe hit comic opera City Workers in Love or from his performances on the CBC television program Hymn Sing.
But now the international world is getting to know Cavanagh as a top notch opera director. The former Winnipegger is all aglow after the opening of his production of Nixon in China in San Francisco. The reviews are starting to come in and they are raves.
Cavanagh is already a highly successful opera director in Canada. He has directed at opera companies all over North America including virtually every one in Canada.
San Francisco Opera is one of the most prestigious opera houses in North America, second only to the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, so this latest premiere really takes him to the big leagues.
"San Francisco truly is one of the great opera houses of the world," said Cavanagh in a telephone interview from San Francisco. "To not only get a chance to direct there, but to direct a new production there was an unbelievably exciting moment in my career."
Cavanagh first directed Nixon in China for Vancouver Opera during the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. The general director of San Francisco Opera attended the production and was so impressed he immediately decided to take the whole production south. Kansas City and San Diego have also jumped on board.
