Guy Abraham performs at the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre June 2 (le 100 nons)
Knowing my musician friends would be there to back me up, I decided it was finally time for me to ignore my shy girl instincts and get up the nerve to do what I had never done before: sing as a solo performer in front of a live audience.

It's time to get to know Wininpeg's Franco-Manitoban musical talent. And the organization
le 100 nons is making it possible this weekend.
It's holding a friendly competition called Les Découvertes manitobaines en chanson at the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre on Saturday, June 2. Four competitors will perform before a live audience for the chance to win great prizes, including sessions with professionals in the music field. The participants are Guy Abraham, Les Sexy, Namwira Folks and La Colonie.
Ariane Jean of Chic Gamine fame is spokesperson for the event and will perform as well.
SCENE asked Ariane what role the Franco-Manitoban music community has played in her life.
I grew up in a home where music was a constant companion. My dad was a singer/songwriter who loved listening to classical music and my mom, a classically trained pianist who loved rock and roll. Our house was always filled with a wide array of music, which inspired me, at an early age, to start filling the air with my own brand of melody.
I was a very shy child, quite timid about sharing my voice with others but singing at home with my parents, brothers and cousins always felt natural to me. It was the idea of singing outside of the house that made me slightly less comfortable until, that is, I found the right group of people to help me bring that safe, familiar feeling to the stage.
I went to a French High school, which had a very good music program, and every year, the students would organize a concert. Knowing my musician friends would be there to back me up, I decided it was finally time for me to ignore my shy girl instincts and get up the nerve to do what I had never done before: sing as a solo performer in front of a live audience.
