Dawud Wharnsby (Miriam Gomaa)
Born in Kitchener Ontario in 1972 as David Howard Wharnsby, he later
converted to Islam and changed his name to the Arabic version of David,
Since then he's become a music sensation across the world, known for his socially conscious folk music.
He was also one of the first musicians to popularise English language 'Nasheed' music- Muslim devotional hymns.
And Dawud Wharnsby is performing in Winnipeg tonight.
SCENE contributor Nadia Kidwai came up with 5 reasons why you should check out Dawud Wharnsby in concert this weekend.
1. His music, his music, his music.
Let's be clear, you don't have to be Muslim to appreciate Wharnsby's talent. One listen to 'Out of the Fields' and all music lovers - regardless of faith- will be absorbed by the poetic lyrics and masterful musical arrangements. Canadian folk music at its best.
2. He's not just a singer.
Can anyone say 'over-achiever'? I mean this guy plays 10 instruments- most of which I have never heard of, what is the 'bodhran' anyway?
Aside from being a musician and songwriter, he's a poet, philosopher, educator, actor, producer and artist. And he's got a pretty good voice too. You don't believe me right? Check this out.
3. He's inspired a generation of Canadian Muslims.
But don't just take my word for it. Here's a couple of quotes from local Dawud Wharnsby fans who are going to his concert tonight:
"To Canadian Muslims he is a relatable artist and faith enthusiast...and diminishes any stereotype of what a Muslim is restricted to be." - Nawar Masri.
"He also really represents what is means to be a Canadian Muslim since he's home-grown and sings in English. I hope some of the youth who come to see him will feel inspired to pursue more of their creative interests. " - Sabiha Durranni
4. It's for a good cause.
All the proceeds from this weekend's concert will go towards the 'Children In Need' program administered by Islamic Relief Canada.
Wharnsby is no stranger to philanthropy. A percentage of all the sales from his recordings are donated to a variety of charitable causes.
