Ramsey Lewis (TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival)
The headline Theatre Series includes Chicago jazz icon Ramsey Lewis and his quintet. Marsalis clan member trombonist Delfeayo is bringing a superstar band that includes Victor Goines and Winard Harper.
Plus 26 year old R & B phenom Janelle Monae makes her first appearance in Winnipeg. Jazz Fest Outreach Coordinator Tyler Sneesby says, "Janelle is James Brown reincarnated, she's got the moves, the voice and the band" and Nolin adds "She's going to be a big star!" I think she's also got the hair.
In the more intimate Club Series, be prepared to be blown away by American pianist Vijay Iyer who Nolin says, "is one of the guys who's keeping jazz alive these days with his prodigious talent." Canadian veterans bassist Michel Donato and pianist Francois Bourassa bring their musical tribute to Bill Evans.
And one of the biggest Canadian buzz bands, BADBADNOTGOOD are appearing at the Pyramid. Their jazz versions of Kanye West and Slum Village's music inspire people to mosh to jazz!
