If I wasn't a blues musician I'd like to be a singing cowboy and make movies like Roy Rogers.
—Brent Parkin, Winnipeg bluesman
Bluesman Brent Parkin has been performing nearly as long as I have been breathing. And that's a long time.
This is someone who lives, breathes and sings the blues. He's even been on the road with B.B. King. Music has shaped Brent Parkin's life. And if you can believe it, he says he still wants to improve as a musician!
Brent Parkin is performing April 14 at the Winnipeg Folk Exchange and also at the Highway 75 Blues and Sports Bar on April 27/28.
SCENE sent Brent Parkin five fast questions to explore the colors that shape his world:
If you had to explain what the blues are to someone who has never heard them before, what would you say?
I've tried to explain what the blues is as a music with deep feeling and with heart and soul, but I think it's best to listen to the blues masters. People like Muddy Waters Robert Johnson, early BB King and many others. You'll get the idea. If you don't I could not explain it to you anyway.
What does playing the blues do for you as a musician?
Blues music has allowed me to play the kind of guitar playing I love and keep me broke most of the time. I don't consider myself just a blues musician, I like to throw in some jazzy stuff, swing, country swing and roots, rock and roll and a lot of good blues.
If you hadn't become a full time blues musician, what would you have done?
If I wasn't a blues musician I'd like to be a singing cowboy and make movies like Roy Rogers. Of course, I don't think there's a demand for singing cowboys these days and I would still be broke.
What's one thing you want to accomplish that you haven't yet done as an artist?
I just want to improve as a musician and have good health to keep doing what I'm doing. I would also like to play more around the world and see the sites, but maybe I will just have to dream about it.
What's one thing you want to accomplish that you haven't yet done as Brent Parkin, the man?
What can any man hope to accomplish except to find happiness, a good old Gibson guitar and try to make the world a better place.
What can Brent Parkin fans expect to hear at your Folk Exchange concert?
This Saturday you're gonna hear blues mixed with a little jazz and roots and a musician pouring his heart out just to try to please ya.
