Michael Petkau Falk is currently in Austin TX, at the South by Southwest festival (SXSW) with his band Les Jupes.
is down there with several other Winnipeg bands including Royal Canoe
and Canon Bros., playing the Manitoba Music SXSW showcase and selling
their northern sound in big Texas country.SCENE asked Mike to give us the skinny while he is down there. Here is what he had to say.
To give you a quick lay of the land - there are at least 100 music venues, many of them crammed into six blocks of 6th Street and three or four blocks of Red River Ave. There are parking lot parties, unofficial showcases in vintage clothing stores or dive bars, the most amazing selection of food in hundreds of camper trailers. Flatstock
runs alongside the festival - an inspired showcase of poster art (Winnipeg artists and venues, do take note!) Whole Foods has a giant set up this year, there are bikes everywhere, and lots of people from around the world with lots of fashion-forward ideas. The coolest hip hop, indie, metal, folk and pop all converge here for one week.
The ultimate reason for coming to SXSW is to do a bit of business, and I've been working harder than ever this year. Had ten meetings Tuesday and another six Wednesday, all focused on finding opportunities for Head in the Sand
artists around the world.
There was a really great audience response last night at the Manitoba Music showcase
! Each band had strong sets and the audiences were right up there and loving it. We love playing in the USA. People are really open minded and excited about new music, and eager to support. Plus, the local beers are great!
The best performance I've witnessed this year was Fiona Apple
, who blew my mind. I Hadn't listened to her in years, but I've always loved her 2nd album. Her band and performance was amazing.
