"Bad idea: Drinking 3 Red Bulls within a 2 hour span to try and stay awake during an all night drive. Why is it bad? Because Red Bull is liquid insane-o juice and will slowly shut your immune system down and then you'll find yourself seriously contemplating one of the corn dogs on the "all-night rotisserie"
—Alexa Dirks, member of Chic Gamine
At any given time around North-America, on a highway somewhere, there's a band traveling to their next gig.
Winnipeg's Chic Gamine rack up thousands of kilometres a year in their beloved van when the band tours. In anticipation of their annual Winnipeg concert at the West End Cultural Centre Feb. 10, we asked them to bare their souls about what goes on in the van.
Here's what the members of Chic Gamine had to say.
Yesterday, we drove from Minneapolis to Winnipeg and decided to pass around pen and paper to jot down stories or facts about our beloved Chic Gamine van. She recently got a new transmission from Wayne at GW Transmission here in Winnipeg (Thanks Wayne!) so she's feeling good as new after years of hard travel. Let us share with you what our van means to us, what happens inside it, how we make it home and where we hide things!
I'm going to play a game called "Two bad ideas and one amazing idea."
1) Bad idea: Drinking 3 Red Bulls within a 2 hour span to try and stay awake during an all night drive. Why is it bad? Because Red Bull is liquid insane-o juice and will slowly shut your immune system down and then you'll find yourself at a truck stop at 6 AM seriously
contemplating one of the corn dogs on the "all-night rotisserie" as a valuable breakfast food option.
2) Bad Idea: MOST books on tape sold in truck stops are weird and boring or just long and annoying with the exception of "The Firm" by John Grisham. So the bad idea is buying them even when you're desperate for entertainment.
3) AMAZING idea: Intentionally hiding change under van seats and in cup holders at random times during a tour and forgetting you've hidden it 'til the next one. Searching for parking meter change has never been more fun, unpredictable and rewarding!
I Spy With My Little Eye - Van Edition
There are some important items that we have accumulated throughout the years which have become important decor staples in this home away from home on wheels.
First, we have Henry; our favourite bobble-head, in moose form, which has been with us since the beginning of our travel times together. Then, we have our trusty GPS that has aided us in getting from point A to point B for years now. Decorating the dashboard is a strange black and white cat laying in a wicker basket. Hanging from the rear-view is a beautiful beaded Dreamcatcher we picked up at a rest stop in Nevada.
Most importantly, we have an exit sign placed directly above the double doors on the side of the van. It helps ensure there is no confusion come time to leave the vehicle.
