Dejan Rafailovic has traveled many miles to bring East and West together in his music.
Dejan is originally from Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina but because of the war, his family moved to Croatia. It was there that he got his start in music, as a trombone player with local brass bands playing weddings and funerals.
When Dejan immigrated to Winnipeg he put down the trombone and picked up the guitar. He studied jazz at the University of Manitoba, and became a member of the Juno nominated Balkan band Les Gitans de Sarajevo. Dejan now makes his home in Ottawa.
For his new solo project, Dejan wanted to take the traditional melodies he knew and apply the framework of Western jazz to them.
