New dad Don Amero with baby Oscar Peter Amero (Pam Amero)
Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year. I remember being a kid and having this intense anticipation waiting for Santa to come. I spent the first 10 years of my life not sleeping at all on Christmas Eve.
I would pace back and forth from my bed to my window; looking up at the night sky trying to get a glimpse of him on his sleigh. As we got a little older I remember how we would always find our gifts before Christmas.
My parents always changed the location of the gifts every year and so my older brother and I would go on these Mission Impossible-like searches for our loot. One of us would stand as the look out and the other the seeker.
In fact, one year we were so bold as to sneak downstairs one Christmas Eve and take one present at a time and very carefully open the gift, much like a professional trying to disarm a bomb. We would be sure to leave anything soft under the tree because we knew that was either underwear or clothes and really what kid wants clothes for Christmas?
It was (and still is) always tradition for my dad to hand out the gifts and we all watch as the person opens it. We had to muster up these fake "wow" faces as if we'd never seen the present before. All those sneak peak openings ruined the surprise, the suspense was gone and come Christmas morning we knew most of what we had under the tree.
Now, all these years later I am so excited because my wife and I just had our first baby (Oscar Peter Amero) and I love that we get to begin some traditions of our own.
Everything from Santa to the true meaning of the season to remember and celebrate the arrival of Jesus Christ. I think I too want to do what my dad does and hand the presents out, only I'll do a better job of hiding the presents because if my boy is anything like me he'll be sneaking around for a peak.
However, he's only 11 days old right now, so this year we may just limit it to decorating together and saying a few prayers of thanks!
