Vince Fontaine picked up the Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year award at the 2011 edition of the Canadian Folk Music Awards, held in Toronto on December 4th. Manitoba musicans had nine nominations going into the awards, but Vince was the sole Manitoban to pick up an award.
Songs for Turtle Island is Vince's first solo release. In addition to earning him a 2011 CFMA award for Best Aboriginal Songwriter, the album has been recognized with a 2011 Native American Music Award for Best Instrumental Album. It also garnered nominations at the Western Canadian Music Awards, the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and the Indian Summer Music Awards.
Local darlings The Wailin' Jennys were up for three awards for their album Bright Morning Stars, including vocal group and ensemble of the year. Toronto's David Travers-Smith and Mark Howard did pick up the Producer of the Year award for Bright Morning Stars at the CFMA's. Band member Ruth Moody was also nominated for three awards for her solo effort, The Garden.
Trio Bembe, Don Amero, Les Surveillantes, Cat Jahnke, Vince Fontaine and Twilight Hotel were also nominated. And Steve Bell, Dave Zeglinski and Murray Pulver shared a nomination for Producer of the year.
