Mezzo-soprano Erica Iris Huang is the 2011 Winner of the 34th Eckhardt-Gramatté (E-Gré) National Music Competition. She began turning heads in the Toronto music scene and wowed the judges in Brandon this past spring for her command of the contemporary repertoire which this competition is known for.
Erica Iris Huang has a way of captivating audiences with her warm stage presence and gorgeous big voice. Her pianist is Emily Hamper, of Stratford Ontario. Emily has accompanied recitals for many presenters including the San Francisco Opera, Calgary Opera and the Indian River and Orford Festivals.
Part of their prize included a 10 concert Canadian tour during the month of November. The tour began in Montreal on November 1. From there they went on to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Toronto, Sudbury, and Brandon.
They perform Sunday November 20 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2 p.m.as part of the Women's Musical Club series. And their final performance takes place (fittingly) at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, University of Calgary on Wednesday November 23.
Each concert will feature the 2011 commissioned work--Eckhardt Songs by Michael Oesterle. Other Canadian works to be performed are by Freedman, Doolittle, Catlin Smith, and Ho. Ms. Huang will also be singing works by Schumann, Monsalvatge, Chausson, Bauld, and Bolcom.
