"In Numerology, the Master Number 11 is the most intuitive of all the Master Numbers. It refers to self illumination, a channel to the subconscious and having insight without rational thought. It is the number of the spiritual messenger, the intuitive with spiritual focus that is centered within the heart. The 11 is also highly inspirational, confident and charismatic in its positive influences." - Numerologist Lexi Brandis
When I was planning this concert I chose November 11, 2011 (11-11-11) because of the significance of the date. It all made so much sense to me!
You see, a number of life-transforming events took place 11 years ago in my life. My father -- who brought our entire family to Canada from Hong Kong in 1974-- passed on in 2000. That same year, I left Fubuki Daiko, a taiko drumming troupe which I co-founded. I left in search of my own 'voice'.
At the same time I made strong connections with a number of Tibetan monks and artists from India - this enhanced my Buddhism practise. I co-founded two world-music trios (SAND and Just Drummin'). I began singing professionally. I couldn't help but expand my music repertoire.
So I feel this concert at the West End has been 11 years in the making! And it reflects the changes that have occurred in my life.
I love mixing things up, blending them together to make something unique and juicy. It's satisfying for me of course - but also satisfying for the listener. Just imagine what a banjo sounds like with a tabla, or how a santur might blend with crystal bowls....
The Iridescent Bug title describes the vastness, the beauty and the uniqueness of a single tiny being/creature, radiating its brilliance to the world. I truly believe if we take the time to observe and appreciate the small things in life, we will see that they are really just a reflection of who we are.

P.S. As a child growing up in Hong Kong, my heart yearned to learn how to play drums (drum kit), but I was not allowed to because of my gender (according to my mom, bless her). I also wanted to be a dancer, but didn't think I had the right body for it, and I loved singing, but never ever thought I'd be doing it professionally. It is in Winnipeg that I get to discover my true path and have the opportunity to bring it to fruition.
