Brand new music video by The Liptonians.
Winnipeg band The Liptonians are up for "Pop recording of the year" at this year's Western Canadian Music Awards. The band is one of a dozen Manitoba acts that are in Whitehorse this weekend for the awards show.
Bucky Driedger is the singer, guitarist and co-founder of The Liptonians and he agreed to answer SCENE's five fast questions just hours after landing in Yukon's capital.
How do you describe Manitoba to people in Whitehorse?
Great, tight-knit music scene. Mediocre public transit. Some of the greatest and kindest people on planet earth. And plenty of time to play shinny on the longest river trail in the world!
I know you've only been there for 1/2 a day, but what's one thing Whitehorse has that you wish Winnipeg had?
The Yukon Brewing Company. The Yukon Red is part red ale, part IPA and is a new favourite. The snowy mountains are a nice touch. Oh, and the air smells faintly of cedar and pine.
What's one thing Winnipeg has that you would miss if you lived in Whitehorse?
Half Pints brewery. Also some of the best brew in the nation. We'd miss debating politics at Cousin's, eating sandwiches in hammocks at Pop Soda's, eating Mushroom Nut Burgers at the Lo Pub and biking around, running amok with our pals.
What are you most looking forward to about the weekend?
Our pals Wool on Wolves (from Edmonton) are here too. We look forward to galavanting around the town with them. We also like putting on ties, so the awards ceremony will be fun.
How do award events like WCMA's make a difference for musicians like you?
We won a WCMA in 2008 and the award opened doors for us in terms of being able to book higher quality shows and provide more press for our albums. Anything that gets music into more people's ears.
And it gave us a reason to finally visit Whitehorse, which is something we've all really wanted to do at some point.
BONUS QUESTION:If you could move one Manitoba restaurant/venue to Whitehorse, what would it be and why?
Restaurant - Nhu Quinn. We swear by #23.
Venue - Lo Pub. Our favourite place to play in Winnipeg. Great people. We've had some of our best hot, sweaty parties ever at the Lo.
