The Winnipeg Folk Festival kicked off on Wednesday night July 6, at Birds Hill Park, and runs to Sunday, July 10.
To deal with the staggering amount of talent the festival is offering up this year, SCENE has enlisted some astute festival veterans to give you daily recommendations.
Today's pro's pick is brought to you from the festival by Winnipeg painter Cyrus Smith.
Festival Credentials: 2011 will mark my 5th year involved in The Prairie Outdoor Exhibition at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. On top of that I have been an active audience member for the past 18 years. I dare not miss a WFF. I have witnessed some of the greatest shows in my life here, not to mention made lifelong friendships as well. This year marks an unprecedented year for me as two friends and I walked the 34 kilometers from the Legislative grounds in Winnipeg to Birds Hill Park.
Recommendation: If I were you, I would make a point of seeing Funky METERS on the Main Stage at 11:20 - Close. They are an extension of the epic Art Neville & George Porter Jr.'s original Meters from the 1970's.
Such great funk!! I've heard almost all of their albums and to see the torch get carried by this four-piece is very exciting. You won't be able to stay still!
Where you can find me: Well my work is installed throughout the festival grounds, however I can tell you to look at the wooden arch entrance way that has the donor listing on it, all of the hydro poles in the food vending area, plus multiple other non-living wooden surfaces house my little paintings. Keep your eyes open.
As for myself, I'll be the guy with his jaw dropped in wonder at another great festival!! See you out there!
