The Winnipeg Folk Festival kicked off Wednesday, July 6, at Birds Hill Park, and runs to Sunday, July 10.
To deal with the staggering amount of talent the festival is offering up this year, SCENE has enlisted some astute festival veterans to give you daily recommendations.
Today's "pro's pick" is brought to you by Winnipeg's accordion-wielding songstress, Ingrid Gatin.
Festival Credentials: I've been coming to the festival for about 6 years now, although my parents brought me once when I was young to see Bruce Cockburn. 10 years old, I totally ignored him, and instead fixated on getting a very cool henna tattoo of a butterfly.
I always come back to this festival because I love the way it feels to be here. Amazing music all day long, some of my favourite artists, and always so many mind blowing new ones. Kudos to the festival, as always.
Recommendation: K.D. Lang is the obvious great choice, I've been listening to her since I was a baby, literally, and her new stuff has this amazing combination of beauty and upbeat. An aesthetic that I love.
The non-obvious choice that I recommend so whole-heartedly is Dan Mangan. He is an incredible man and performer, another who mixes his beautiful music with an upbeat tempo, to knock your socks off. If you're wearing any. Which you probably aren't! Happy Folk Fest!
Where you can find me: I will be playing Friday, July 8 at 4:45 at Shady Grove. This is my last time doing the young performer's program, which has been an amazing learning experience every year, meeting these amazing mentors from all over the world.
