Melissa McClelland, Mama Cutsworth's Folk Fest recommendation (Mavreen David)
The Winnipeg Folk Festival kicks off on Wednesday night July 6, at Birds Hill Park, and runs to Sunday, July 10.
To deal with the staggering amount of talent the festival is offering up this year, SCENE has enlisted some astute festival veterans to give you daily recommendations.
Today's "pro's pick" is brought to you by Sarah Michaelson, aka Mama Cutsworth.Festival Credentials:
This is my second year playing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, one of my all-time favourite events happening anywhere.
Although it's my second time performing at the Festival, I've been an avid volunteer on the Campground Box Office crew since 2001.
I keep coming back to the Folk Fest for many, many reasons: getting away from the city for a few days, the community of people who go there, and of course, the music. (The Whales Tails come in at a close fourth, to be honest!) Recommendation:
Tonight, make sure you get a chance to see Melissa McClelland's
set on the Main Stage. She's a triple threat with her classic yet contemporary songwriting, her guitar skills, and her beautiful voice. She's often playing alongside her husband Luke Doucet or doing back up for Sarah McLachlan, so any chance to see Melissa in the spotlight is a treat. She's sweet and sultry all in one - don't miss it!
Where you can find me:
I'll be on stage with DJ Hunnicutt Friday, July 8th at the "Big Blue @ Night." Come down at 10:15 pm for our four-turntable dance party set! I'll also be spinning again Sunday, July 10th at the Big Blue.
I love playing this stage in the evening because it's simultaneously wild and huge, yet so much more intimate than the tarp-filled field of Main Stage. The Big Blue crowd is always willing to dance until they drop, which, for a DJ, is pretty much all you could ever want.Sarah Michaelson, aka Mama Cutsworth
