His art is inspired a lot by his poetry. You see the personality in the art the same as you do in the music.
—Bill Mayberry, owner of Mayberry Fine Art
35 works of
art by Leonard Cohen will be part of an exhibition at Mayberry Fine
Art just in time for the music legend's Winnipeg concert.
The
show features high quality limited edition prints, with Cohen's embossed
seal on each one, ranging in price from $2,500 to $7,000.
It's something of a coup for the gallery. "I'm glad to bring it to Winnipeg," says owner Bill Mayberry. "I think it will create a bit of
excitement, especially among the fans."
Mayberry himself is a big fan.
He attended Cohen's last concert and has tickets for his upcoming
performance on March 11.
"We promote Canadian art," Mayberry continues. "That's been our specialty for 40 years. We're very broad-based, very diverse, and of course I see Leonard Cohen as one of our icons in our Canadian poetry, literature and song, and it's nice to add a visual to that as well. So I think he's part of the mix of our unique Canadianism."
Cohen's work is very diverse, Mayberry says, including images of locations, pictures with guitars, stylized imagery of himself and female figurative works. Some of them also have text, including his own poetry written right on the pieces.
"His art is inspired a lot by his poetry. You see the personality in the art the same as you do in the music. He's a very good drawer, a good draftsman. He's very creative, very imaginative," Mayberry says.
Mayberry also points out that many of his album covers are his own art and there is art throughout his books of poetry, too.
The big question
remains, will the man himself show up? Mayberry says Cohen
has showed up for exhibitions in the past, however it's always
unannounced, because if it were known, then you'd be mobbed with people.
But given that Cohen will likely
be staying at a hotel just a short block away, Mayberry remains hopeful.
"Leonard Cohen -- The Poet. The Painter" is at Mayberry Fine Art from March 9 - 23. The public opening is March 10. Leonard Cohen's Old Ideas World Tours concert is at the MTS Centre on March 11.
