Ismaila Alfa chose the Top 5 local tracks of the year...and didn't even try to choose one of his own! (CBC)
It's not exactly a countdown because they're in no particular order, but here are SCENE On Air host Ismaila Alfa's picks for the top five local songs of the past year.
"Show Me Your Eyes" by Royal Canoe
Winnipeg's most innovative band doing what they do best. Finding a quirky little groove and pushing it to the most unexpected places. A great vocal part too. Makes you bang your head!
"Heart Full of Anger" by French Press
Cleverly written song, catchy chorus. Chantal Emond's voice is one I'd like wrap myself up in and enjoy!
"Waiting" by The New Lightweights
The pulsing beat of this song combined with the lyrics and the dynamic of Alexa's voice bring out the best memories I have of growing up in 'Peg city.
"Welcome to the Machine" by Curtis Nowosad
Curtis' ability to rework an existing pop or rock tune amazes me. Very rarely can you get me to listen to a seven and a half minute song from top to bottom. I usually fast forward to my favourite solo or verse BUT...this tune gets heard from top to bottom every time...check it out!
"Friend" by Ras-Tamils
Just a great feel good reggae tune. Franklin Fernando's voice just wails over the WICKED reggae rhythms from the band...just LOVE the bass line and the horns. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
