"Taxidermy: The Musical" is stuffed with teen spirit!
Wanna know what it feels like to go Off Off WAY OFF Broadway? Check yourself into Venue 29 at the Forks for Taxidermy: The Musical
, the most off-the-wall show you'll see at this year's Fringe.
17 year-old Winnipeggers Devon Gillingham and Connor Wielgosz have created a rock musical that's stuffed with teen spirit. It follows the highs, lows and loves (gay and straight) of two quirky animal mounters. (Yes, that joke gets repeated a lot and no, it never gets old.)
With a thin plot that includes everything from Virgin Mary fantasies to fake Christopher Walken cameos, Taxidermy: The Musical
relies a bit too much on quirk and not enough on drama and suspense.
Still, it's easily fuelled by the energetic performances of Gillingham, Wielgosz and their friends Arthur Holroyd and Carly Berthon, as well as fun, original, non-stop musical numbers. (Unfortunately, the recorded music often overpowers the excellent singing.)Taxidermy: The Musical
is produced by young adults and perfect for that audience, but all the F-bombs in the show mean it's not necessarily suitable for kids. Also, it's only 75 minutes long, not 90 minutes as advertised.
