Shelby Bond has painted himself into a corner and wants you to admire his nice brushstrokes.
Shelby Bond: People Pleaser
delivers us a personable fellow hopelessly dependent on his need to fix his self-destructive addict girlfriend.
We see three characters: the straight-ahead confession of Shelby himself, the nightclub comic Shelby, straining to pull laughs out of the badly damaged hat of his life, and the European analyst who provides comic definitions of the mental illnesses that contribute to this often repeated dismal picture of human behaviour.
As a standup routine it is funny in many places. As a play, its largest weakness is in the transitions between characters. A greater commitment to the presentation of each scene would make the work much stronger.
