It’s difficult to feel invested in any of the stories when they zip by so quickly, and feature stock characters straight out of central casting.
has a delightful premise: an aging matriarch named Sarah decides to make a "legacy quilt," to pass on to her four daughters. Each block of the quilt tells a different story about life as a pioneer woman.
However, it quickly becomes apparent that cramming 16 different stories into a 75-minute play is pretty ambitious. It's difficult to feel invested in any of the stories when they zip by so quickly, and feature stock characters straight out of central casting: the wistful spinster, the moralizing doctor, the kindly grandmother. This is a world where men don't talk much, boys are all scamps, and women solve every problem with a quilting bee.
The 16-member cast performs enthusiastically, if not always confidently. Rhonda Kennedy Rogers as Sarah is particularly good. However, some of the actors had trouble projecting to the back of MTC Warehouse, and couldn't always be heard above the music.
Overall, this quilt feels patchy and stretched a bit too thin.
