Bravo to Melanie Gill for creating "Opera Mouse", a Fringe show that’s equally satisfying for kids and their accompanying adults.
Bravo to Melanie Gall for creating Opera Mouse
, a Fringe show that's equally satisfying for kids and their accompanying adults.
It features an intrepid mouse named Tilly, who pursues her dreams despite repeated reminders that mice are supposed to squeak, not sing. (Think Ratatouille
with a soundtrack by Puccini).
Gall may not be a diva but she is an expressive performer with a serious set of pipes who can convincingly belt out Bizet.
Aside from the arias, she has other techniques in her repertoire to yank kids back into the story any time their attention starts to flag. (She credits veteran Fringer Erik de Waal for coaching her on that front).
She asks kids questions, gets good and silly and invites them to be part of the fun. They get to shriek "Eek! A mouse!" And they get a mini-lesson in singing opera.
I'm planning to catch an encore performance with my four-year-old. Opera Mouse
is just the ticket for kids ages 3-8, and as a bonus they'll learn a few things about Mozart along the way.
