The show left the sense of performers not quite familiar enough with mediocre material.
Following in the overlarge footsteps of such macabre clown acts as Mump
and Smoot, Clarence and Desolita have their work cut out for them. Melancholy Follies
never quite found its stride on opening night. Framed as a party where
the lady of the manor is mysteriously absent, the de facto hosts proceed
through several sketches each equipped with some minor laughs.
Desolita's death whirl to the music of Carmen
is amusing but never delivers the punch their earnestness seems to
promise. The production left the sense of performers not quite familiar
enough with mediocre material.
