Company: Ryan Gladstone, Vancouver, BC
Venue: 14 - The King’s Head Pub
Some delightfully witty writing and a headlong dive of commitment from the actors into the whole package.
John Paterson's and Ryan Gladstone's introduction to their play made me nervous because confessing to a mere four days rehearsal sounds like a lame excuse.
They proceeded to struggle to maintain their place in the script, blew lines left wing, right wing and centre, spilled a beer over the crib script that sat on the table in front of them, and dropped character more frequently than Harvey Korman wearing oiled gloves.
It was hilarious.
The source of that hilarity was twofold: some delightfully witty writing that would be funny merely to read and the frenetic headlong dive of commitment from Paterson and Gladstone into the whole package.
For hockey lovers there are enough in-jokes to force Pittsburgh to trade Crosby. For the general fringer there are two talented comedians worth seeing sweat.
If my star rating seems not to match, it's because I think you should see this show on Monday or Tuesday after the boys have sharpened their skates and their transitions.
