While I wouldn't attribute supernatural powers to him, there are plenty of "how'd he do that?" moments here.
Performer Tim Motley might've found his opening performance something of a pain, thanks to a dislocated shoulder. But most of his near-capacity crowd probably didn't.Dirk Darrow: NCSSI (Not Completely Serious Supernatural Investigator)
seems like a pretty straightforward film noir gumshoe mystery at its start. But it's really much more a mentalism and magic act - and an often impressive one at that.
Motley plays the title character, a fast-talking, and sometimes fairly crass, private dick (and yes, there are many jokes based on that word). He solves the show's fairly standard (and not entirely relevant) whodunnit through a series of slight of hand tricks and "mind reading." And while I wouldn't attribute supernatural powers to him, there are plenty of "how'd he do that?" moments here.
The balance of detective story and magic act isn't always perfect, and there are some slow spots in the hour-long show. But Motley keeps up a genuinely funny patter with his audience, and provides enough "wow" factor to make this one a crowd pleaser worth investigating.
